Save Our Earth?

The issue of climate change, has still been discussing til today. It sure has its impact on people regardless whether they are aware of it or not.

The fate if the world apparently rests on the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) held in Copenhagen. Can our leaders agree to break the storm clouds that ominously hang over our heads?

Nowadays our media has been saturated with phrases like "Save the Earth". I bet anyone of you who are reading this saw the above phrase (Save the Earth) before. So, what whould you think? Or what do you have in your mind? (answer it to yourself honestly).

The slogan "Save Our Earth" can be found in most of the places, such as from environmental groups, news articles, educational materials and advertisements. You can see it almost everywhere, and yet, majority of the people on Earth, not just Malaysian, have the "Tak-apa" attitude toward things. Most of them will think that maybe some other "great" people will do the job and this is non of my business. Guess what? You're so wrong. Don't you thing we all have a certain responsibilities to pay?

Nevertheless, I bet not just me and myself only, but other people too, have argue that although the sentiment is right, the statement itself will only serves to give leaders an unrealistic goal.

What do you think is causing all these climate changes? Yes, but if you're not sure, I will let you know. Morality it is.

Climate change is a moral crisis where our leader must choose between protecting future generations or protecting short-term prosperity. It's not literally saving the Earth. Our planet is billions of years old and it will live for billions more regardless of what we do. Let's put it into context. According to th best estimates, the Earth may exist for another 5 billion years before the Sun goes supernova and destroys it. However, the Earth will become so hot until it is unsuitable for living thing to survive for the next 500 years, thanks to humans themselves.

And ofcourse, some optimistec people will argue that the process of the Earth heating up is natural and it has been heating up since the day the Earth has been created. Yes, I agreed with that. But what I'm emphasizing here is that we are making the process faster and faster.

Our planet has seen extinction events on a global scale before and lived to tell the tale. Approximately 97% of all species that have ever lived on Earth are now extinct. And the percentage will goes higer.

On a subconscious level, many leaders might have recognised that this "save our Earth" request simply unachievable. They should shift to "save life on Earth" instead of "Save our Earth". This is a more realistic goal that we all can relate to, and it is more easier for us to achieve. Therefore, the Earth doesn't need saving, but humanity does.

I'm posting this because I have a sense of guilt deep inside me whenever I look at the slogan "Save our Earth". Using huge amount of electricity (when it is not neccesary) is one of my... I call it bad habit. And i'm trying to make awareness of this issue. No one is perfect right? So, I will change it now by bit. Nothing is so called "hard to achieve", but there is something called "Whether or not it should be achieve".

Human is a habitual animal, changing all the negative habits to positive will help to save lives. =)
